Urban And Environmental Applied Physics
Pre-requisites
This course assumes that students have already acquired some basic knowledge during their three-years degree, and in particular:
If necessary, students who are not already in possession of these basic knowledge can integrate their cultural background by using the teaching material (slides, handouts, video recording of the lessons) taken from the web page of the Environmental Technical Physics course held over the years past:
Flipped Classroom - 1st semester
The first half of the course
(corresponding to the 1st cycle of lessons) is set with the methodology known as
"flipped classroom": the didactic part of the teaching makes use of multimedia
material made available on this website (NOT on ELLY or on other poorly
expandable platforms), as better specified in the following calendar.
During online meetings orgainzed on MS Teams, students should report to the class after viewing and studying the material
relevant to each lesson, which is made available one week in advance. In the virtual classroom the activity is carried out as a
"workshop", based on the solution of concrete verification or design problems.
The teacher and the students themselves alternate on the blackboard, solving
problems also in numerical form and carrying out project calculations and
sizing.
Four "flpped classrooms" are planned, with reference to the following topics:
1 | Energy requirement for heating and air
conditioning of buildings Verification of the thermal and hygrometric insulation of the building envelope |
2 | Noise pollution and acoustic classification
of the territory - verification of compliance with the zone limits Verification of passive acoustic requirements of buildings |
3 | Design and energy requirements for interior lighting of
buildings Natural lighting through windows |
4 | Design and energy requirements for street lighting Lighting pollution, the "dark sky" initiative |

Exam Project (Laboratory) - 2nd
Semester
The activity carried out in the first part of the course is aimed at
developing a project, to be carried out during the second part (from March 2021
onwards), which is assigned to groups of 2 students, and which constitutes
during this phase the main activity carried out in the classroom.
Students are entrusted with the drafting of a urban planning project related in an urban context with high population density, for which they will
have to produce the technical documentation required by the current
regulatory framework, and more specifically the following two documents:
At each lesson, some students present the progress of their project and the
whole class interacts providing suggestions and criticisms.
The final aim of the laboratory is the production of two chapters of the A3 book
(acoustics, lighting), which will form the basis of
evaluation together with the work done in the classroom.
